The rug in front of the back slider takes a beating. How an in-home rug cleaning goes
First we look at the rug together. Fiber matters most: wool, cotton, jute, nylon, olefin, polyester and silk all behave differently once they get wet, and some dyes are touchier than others. The technician checks the colors in a hidden corner before anything else touches the face of the rug.
Then comes a thorough dry soil removal. Rugs hold a surprising amount of grit, and that dried clay especially. Pulling it out dry keeps it from turning into mud during the clean.
Spots get a pre-treatment matched to what they are. After that, the carbonated cleaning solution goes on and is worked through the pile, and the machine lifts it back out with the loosened dirt. We use very little moisture, so the backing doesn't get saturated and the rug is usually dry in an hour or so. Our solution has no soap in it. That keeps rugs soft afterward, where shampooed rugs tend to feel stiff and get dirty again fast.
The last step is a look at the finished rug with you. Anything that bothers you gets redone on the spot, and if it still falls short, the cleaning is free.
Rugs on tile floors
Few people think about this part. A rug on tile grinds against a hard surface every time someone walks across it, and sand trapped underneath works like sandpaper on the back of the rug. Vacuum both sides once in a while, and put a rug pad under it. A pad is cheap and it saves the rug.
Tile also means you see dirt sooner. A rug lying on carpet hides its soil, but on a light porcelain floor the gray shows up at the edges within a few months. Once a year is a good cleaning rhythm for most rugs. With pets, every six to nine months.

What we can and can't fix
Pet accidents on a rug are very treatable when they're recent. Urine that's soaked through a thick wool rug for months is harder, and some of it may linger even after treatment. We'll tell you that before we start.
Dye bleed is the one I worry about most. If a rug has already bled, say a red border running into a cream field after someone tried to spot-clean it with a household product, that color has moved into the fibers. A cleaning can soften the look, but we can't pull dye back where it came from. Same with sun fading on rugs under a big window.
